International Women’s Day 2024: Inspire Inclusion

Yiaga Africa proudly joins the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day 2024, a momentous occasion to reaffirm our commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment. Today, we reflect on the incredible achievements of women worldwide and acknowledge the work that still lies ahead. Together, let us rally behind the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day: “Inspiring Inclusion.”

As an organisation dedicated to fostering inclusive democracy and promoting active citizenship, Yiaga Africa recognizes the pivotal role women play in shaping societies. We acknowledge the courage, resilience, and unwavering determination displayed by women across Africa, who have been at the forefront of transformative change, overcoming barriers and defying societal norms.

However, we also acknowledge that gender inequality persists, hindering the progress and potential of women in numerous fields. Today, we take a stand against all forms of discrimination, violence, and marginalisation that impede women’s full participation and equal representation. We believe that empowering women is not only a matter of human rights but also fundamental to achieving sustainable development and social justice.

Yiaga Africa remains committed to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment. Through our programs and initiatives, we continually strive to amplify the voices of women, break down barriers, and create platforms that facilitate women’s meaningful participation in decision-making processes. We will work tirelessly to promote equal opportunities, encourage inclusivity, and foster a conducive environment that allows women to thrive in all spheres of life.

On this International Women’s Day, we join the call for the 10th National Assembly to ensure constitutional amendments to increase the representation of women in the Legislature and ensure that at least 30% of appointments at the Federal and State levels are women. In addition, we join the demand for full citizenship rights for Nigerian women. We also call on the government to ensure gender-responsive budgeting and enable a comprehensive approach to the fight against sexual and gender-based violence. We acknowledge that insecurity and poverty have left more women and girls vulnerable to abuse, violence and the horror of kidnapping and we call on the government to take deliberate actions to address the level of insecurity in Nigeria and implement economic policies that can reduce the economic hardship in Nigeria.

Yiaga Africa calls upon governments, civil society organisations, private institutions, and individuals to join us in collective action. Together, we can create a brighter future where gender equality is not just an aspiration but a reality. Through collaboration and solidarity, we can build societies where all women can enjoy their fundamental rights, realise their full potential, and actively contribute to developing their communities and nations.

On this International Women’s Day, let us celebrate the remarkable achievements of women who have shattered glass ceilings, challenging stereotypes, and paving the way for future generations. Together, let us champion gender equality by promoting women’s rights, investing in education and skills development, and providing economic opportunities.

On International Women’s Day 2024, let us stand united, and with unwavering resolve, strive to empower women for a brighter future. Together, we can achieve a world where gender equality prevails, and the rights of every woman are respected, protected, and upheld.
