Eschew electoral illegalities or risk jail – INEC warns

Ahead of the governorship election in Anambra state, National Commissioner for South East of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Okechukwu Ibeanu has cautioned eligible voters in the state to eschew all forms of electoral illegalities.

He said anybody without the card has no business nearing the polling centre on election day, warning that those court would be making their way to jail.

Briefing newsmen at the end of his supervisory and evaluation tour of the State yesterday in Awka, Ibeanu said the ongoing continuous voter registration in the 326 wards was to afford every eligible voter an opportunity to obtain the Permanent Voters Card.

“I have to personally come here to ensure that the registration exercise at ward level is being carried out as specified by the commission, because we do not want to create any gap that would hinder the success of the Nov.18 governorship election in the state,” he said.

He noted that the commission moved the registration exercise from local government area to ward level to ensure that no vacuum was created.

Ibeanu who explained that the exercise was for those who were yet to obtain the card, warned against double registration, noting that such act is punishable offence.
