Anambra guber: Students stage walk for peaceful, credible poll

Students of various tertiary institutions in Nigeria of Anambra origin, Wednesday, staged a peaceful walk in Awka, the state capital for a free, fair and credible governorship election on November 18.

The students under the aegis of National Union of Anambra State Students (NUASS) marched along major streets of Awka with placards to depict their quest for a peaceful election in the state.

Accompanied by the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Police personnel to ensure a peaceful march, the students displayed placards with inscriptions such as, “National Union of Anambra Students says no to election violence. Father, mother, daughter, son, is one vote. I am for peace, you are for peace, we are for peace.”

Speaking to journalists, the leader of the students and National President of NUASS, Echegbo Chibunna Godwin said the students were tired of being used and dumped by politicians who on getting to position relegated their welfare to the background.

He said, “We are saying that there must be an election in Anambra State and the election must be free and fair.

“We want a credible election and so we want the political parties, the candidates and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take note of our demand today. We have come from across the federation down to our state capital, Awka to say we want a credible election come November 18.

“This time around students are going to determine who becomes the next governor of Anambra State because we are over 20,000 students with our voters’ card and we are ready. There will be no need for shooting; no fighting, anybody that loses should congratulate the winner.”

Emphasizing that the students had not endorsed any candidate or party, the student leader said, “We the students are going to support those who will see us and recognize us because over the years we have been sidelined by those in government but now we are out to say whatever that belongs to Anambra students will be given to them.”
