Yiaga Africa is pleased to walk with you through this reflective journey of the state of democracy in Nigeria as creatively represented in each piece intentionally conceived as part of our ‘Making Democracy Deliver for Us’ exhibition. The exhibition aims to highlight the state of Nigeria’s democracy, its challenges, and the role of citizens in preserving democracy while ensuring it delivers development to the people. Each piece is borne from within the inner light of young creatives inviting us to experience their perception of the state of democracy.
Our curatorial vision is to provoke the audience to reflect on and engage with the idea of making democracy work for the common good through civically oriented art. A young democracy, with a vibrant youth population can best be accessed through the eyes of the youth. This reflective journey reminds us of the contradiction in the gradual normalization of a culture of leadership that negates the principles of democracy. It reminds us that perception and reality exist in permeating time and space. While perception may not necessarily inform reality, our reality largely influences our perception. Making democracy work for us must become a reality that informs the perception of the people on the state of democracy.
