YIAGA AFRICA’S REFLECTION CONFERENCE ON DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS IN WEST AFRICA – PROF. ATTAHIRU M. JEGA’S KEYNOTE ADDRESS

Despite concerning evidence of democratic backsliding in the West African region, there remains a strong and growing desire among citizens for representative and accountable governance. The key to addressing this challenge lies in electing competent representatives who are both accountable and responsive to the needs and aspirations of the people, ultimately fostering societal progress and socioeconomic development. To achieve this, citizens, credible civil society organizations (CSOs), and politically committed actors must continue to mobilize effectively for the advancement of sustainable and credible democratic development.

While there has been significant progress in the establishment and strengthening of relatively independent election management bodies (EMBs) across West Africa, much work remains to be done. Focus must remain on implementing legal, institutional, and ethical reforms that ensure the credibility and integrity of election preparation and conduct. Furthermore, the commitment of regional bodies like ECOWAS and individual governments to uphold democratic principles will be essential in reversing the trend of democratic backsliding and restoring public faith in democratic governance and its long-term consolidation.

To gain deeper insights into these crucial issues and understand the way forward, read the full keynote delivery by Prof. ATTAHIRU M. JEGA, whose expert perspective offers valuable guidance on advancing democracy in the region.
