This week on The Ballot, Nigeria’s electoral and political space witnessed significant updates. INEC and the National Bureau of Statistics began exploring new collaboration on data sharing to strengthen national development, while Rivers State prepared for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and lawmakers to return to office after six months of emergency administration. INEC also reported over 3.5 million new registrations in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration, with young people and students making up the majority. At the same time, former lawmaker Senator Athan Achonu renewed calls for diaspora voting, citing the economic weight of Nigerians abroad.

In party politics, INEC shortlisted 14 new associations for consideration as political parties, while the ADC celebrated David Mark’s confirmation as National Chairman. INEC and the Nigeria Police cautioned political actors against early campaigns ahead of 2027, warning of electoral law breaches, just as the EFCC arraigned two individuals over ₦26 million allegedly linked to vote buying.
