The Ballot Newsletter, Series 2, Issue 35

This Week on The Ballot: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reported that 1.37 million Nigerians completed online pre-registration within the first week of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), with young people and women making up the majority. While INEC described the surge as consistent with past trends, opposition parties including the PDP, LP, ADC, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar challenged the figures, raising concerns about unusually high numbers from Osun and Lagos States.

At the same time, the All Progressives Congress (APC) declared its 2027 presidential ticket open, even as party leaders and governors continue to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Former President Goodluck Jonathan renewed calls for deeper electoral reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy, SDP’s Adewole Adebayo criticized the dominance of APC and PDP, the Edo State House of Assembly moved to address absentee councillors through possible by-elections, and the School of Social and Political Thought pushed for stricter rules to bar partisan loyalists from quick appointments into INEC.
