A public intellectual, development and humanitarian specialist, activist and leader. Passionate about social justice and committed to human and environmental development. Extensive International strategic leadership experience spanning over 25 years. Currently the Country Director of Care International in Nigeria and earlier Country Director of Plan International and ActionAid International. Held different other International responsibilities in different organisations. As the Head of ActionAid International Democracy and Governance Programme, coordinated and developed democracy and governance programme in 23 different African countries, supporting state institutions and working closely with International and regional organisations including the African Union (AU), Southern African Development Corporation (SADC), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), European Union, OECD and the UN system among others, I am extensively traveled. Has worked in over 10 different countries and traveled for different programme and operational missions to over 45 countries in the last 15 years. Led some interesting and pioneering advocacy in Africa and Europe, including advocacy on environment, education, HIV/AIDS, debt, youth participation, illicit financial flow and development financing.
Previously, taught Political Science and Defence Studies at Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna and has written extensively in books and learned journals. Been a major resource person on Nigeria and Africa security, democracy and governance issues to different national and international fora and media. He authored “Clash of Identity: State, Society and Ethno-Religious Conflicts in Northern Nigeria”, 2010, the book is a major contribution to the understanding of the dynamics of violent conflicts in northern Nigeria.
He is a laureate of different institutions: A trained and certified on strategic leadership, project management, policy advocacy and strategic engagement, finance management, negotiation and strategic communication in different institution in Africa, Asia, Europe and America.
Dr Abdu, has a significant presence in African civil society space. He’s contributed significantly to Africa/Nigeria’s development policy environment and state institutional strengthening. A leading voice on the challenges of poverty, inequality and exclusion in Africa. Has in the last two and a half decades invested actively in influencing people, communities, institutions and systems. He holds a PhD in Political Science from Bayero University Kano, Nigeria.
