The Yiaga Africa Centre for Legislative Engagement is working to strengthen the legislature at national, state and local government levels. This is in recognition of the important role the legislature plays in delivering good governance and development in a democracy. Under this project, Yiaga Africa has commissioned several studies that accentuate the challenges faced by the legislature. The #StrenghtenNASS project which is being implemented in Six geo-political zones of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory has the following objectives:

  • Strengthening the legislature as an institution of accountability and representation in order to improve the quality of government policies and programs.
  • Building the capacity of legislators, committee members and secretariat staff in order to enhance the quality of legislative output with regard to lawmaking, oversight and constituency engagement.
  • Entrenching openness, transparency and accountability in legislative processes and stakeholder participation.
  • Improving citizens' access to the National Assembly which will increase citizens’ knowledge on the legislature as well as promote issue-based legislative engagement.

The #StrengthenNASS project is supported by the European Union through the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN).
