In the coming months, 10 On-Air Personalities across 10 states in Nigeria will kick off innovative anti-corruption radio programmes to mainstream young people into the fight against corruption in Nigeria. This is following the announcement of winners of the Bounce Corruption Radio Ambassadors Innovative Contest for Radio Campaign on Anti-Corruption organised by Yiaga Africa and supported by the MacArthur Foundation.
The Bounce Corruption Radio Ambassadors network was launched by Yiaga Africa in 2017 to galvanize citizens’ voices in the fight against corruption and demand accountability through radio, which remains a veritable medium of communication in Nigeria and reaches a diverse audience across social class, age, and other forms of diversity.
The innovative contest, which was the second edition, provided an opportunity for the Radio Ambassadors to share innovative program ideas and host anti-corruption programs for a period of time while the radio campaign is aimed at supporting the Bounce Corruption Radio Ambassadors to implement innovative initiatives to promote accountability. These initiatives are expected to inspire citizens’ interest to join the fight against corruption in Nigeria and build a more resilient society against corruption.
Speaking on the contest, the Programme Manager, Governance and Development at Yiaga Africa, Ibrahim Faruk said that the winners were chosen after a thorough review of all applications received to identify the most innovative ideas to be sponsored under the Bounce Corruption contest.
“The idea of the contest for innovative radio campaigns is to not only have entries on prospective radio shows but to identify the best ideas with huge potentials to achieve the goal of the #BounceCorruption project. The BC radio ambassadors were selected as outstanding on-air personalities driving important conversations on National issues with wide listenership in their respective spaces of influence. Our hope is that the winners will accept this opportunity to take the fight against corruption to another level,” he said.
In recognition of the important role of the Bounce Corruption Radio Ambassadors in mobilizing and increasing citizens’ participation in the fight against corruption, Yiaga Africa will be providing seed funds to selected Radio Ambassadors.
The Bounce Corruption Project is aimed at mainstreaming citizens, especially youth in the fight against corruption and impunity in Nigeria as well as complement the efforts of state and non-state actors in the fight against corruption with the overall goal to promote zero tolerance for corruption and impunity through effective citizens’ oversight and mobilisation for open and accountable governance.
