Assessing 2018 Sierra-Leone Elections: Successes, Challenges and Lessons for Africa

The Republic of Sierra Leone conducted its general elections to elect the President, Parliament and local councils. The Presidential election was inconclusive as no candidate secured 55% of the vote to win the first round. In line with constitutional stipulations, presidential run-off election was conducted on March 28, 2018.

Julius Maada Bio of the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) won the run-off elections against ruling party’s Dr. Samura Kamara after securing 51.8% of the votes. The National Electoral Commission (NEC) received commendations for ensuring credible and transparent elections amidst intrigues, controversies and violence.
