April 8, 2016, Abuja, Nigeria: Ahead of the Saturday, April 9th, 2016 FCT Area Council elections, the Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth and Advancement (YIAGA) will deploy observers across the six Area Councils to observe the elections. The election observation mission is deployed in line with YIAGA’s commitment to deepening the integrity of local government elections in Nigeria.

Using a specific checklist, the observers will assemble reports on the functionality of the card reader machines, compliance of electoral guidelines, deployment of election materials (ballot papers & result sheets), results collation and electoral fraud. Real-time updates from polling units will be transmitted to the tracking center using social media tools. With the aid of social media tools, YIAGA will also track electoral offences, report critical incidents, douse tensions, dispel rumors and most importantly elicit rapid response from critical stakeholders in the electoral process e.g. INEC, security agencies, media, and civil society.

YIAGA expects that its findings will enhance the credibility of elections whilst showcasing the role of youth and technology in deepening electoral democracy in Nigeria.

YIAGA urges voters to go out and peacefully cast their vote. Polling stations open at 8:00am. There will be simultaneous accreditation and voting for the elections. To reports challenges, irregularities or violence, send text messages or WhatsApp messages to YIAGA via 08169401359 or Calls – 08079385244.  All complaints will be directed to the appropriate authorities especially INEC and the security agencies.

Finally, YIAGA calls on all stakeholders in the election process to live up to the expectation of Nigerians. We call on INEC to deliver free, fair and credible elections in the FCT. We also urge the security agencies to remain non-partisan in the discharge of their duties.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Signed.
